About Hartley Brook and Hatfield

About Hartley Brook

Hartley Brook is a large community primary school with a roll of 563, drawing pupils from an area of significant social and economic disadvantage. The percentage of pupils with special educational needs is above average. The school is 3-form entry with an admission limit of 87. There is a 39 place nursery, a special needs nursery unit and 2 integrated resource units (KS1 & 2). There is also a 6 place Nurture Unit and a 6 place inclusion unit. The school has recently undergone significant refurbishment.

In May 2007 Hartley Brook was given a Notice to Improve and in 2008 it was judged to be an improving school making satisfactory progress, with Ofsted noting “an aspirational climate for learning”, “increasingly rapid improvement” and  a school which “harnesses effectively the expertise and energy from within the local community”.  Identified priorities for Hartley Brook are to raise standards in English, Maths and Science; improve the clarity of pupils’ targets and increase the level of challenge in lessons, particularly for higher attaining pupils.

About Hatfield

The nearby Hatfield Primary is a large school with a roll of 407, and a growing number of pupils from minority ethnic backgrounds, many of whom speak English as an additional language. The school is 2-form entry with an admission limit of 56.  In May 2007 it was given a notice to improve and in January 2008 it was judged to have made significant improvements within a “happy, positive environment”. Test results have improved significantly over the past 3 years. The school does not have its own nursery. However, Bellhouse Preschool is being relocated into Verdant Way, a refurbished building across the road from school. This will be working in close collaboration with school and it has been agreed that the school can use the additional rooms in the building to develop the services needed to properly support the local community.
